To Professor Winston,

I wonder if you might be able to help me with my slight predicament. The other night I was reading my son to sleep with the well-known poem The Owl and the Pussycat when he asked me what, on earth, is a runcible spoon. Well, it’s got me stumped, Professor. Any ideas?

What a wonderfully dull predicament, Mr. Blowers. I think Mr. Slightly could learn a thing or two from you.

Despite its name, the runcible spoon is actually a fork. It boasts three broad prongs, one of which harbours a lightly sharpened edge. This clever innovation makes it the perfect piece of cutlery for the consumption of cakes, both sponge and cheese, eliminating the need for a knife.

I hope this answers your son’s question. As an additional piece of advice I would suggest that you take your son to view some runcible spoons at your nearest department store. You might ask him to compile a short report on their various makes and designs. This should salve his curiosity in the dullest way imaginable.

Oh, and if you should run into Mr. and Mrs. Mason, do be sure to comment upon the weather.
