Note to Americans: in addition to being another word for a hooded pullover jacket — sometimes called a windbreaker — in the UK, the word anorak is also used to describe a person with unfashionable and solitary interests.

The word anorak comes from the Inuit word in Greenland for wind. It’s what the Inuits called the wind and water proof jackets they wore. The jackets made from seal and caribou skins. They were pullover jackets; they did not open from the front.
