Jan National Nothing Day

A day to celebrate nothing, created in 1973 by newspaperman Harry Pullman Coffin, is the ultimate unvent, the ultimate dull day. Coffin founded the day “to provide Americans with one national day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing, or honoring anything.”

It’s one of our favorite days. Is there anything duller than doing nothing?

What things will you not be doing on Nothing Day? Or, looking at it another way, what “nothings” will you be doing?

Although it calls itself a “National” day, it’s not an official national day. It was not established by by an act of Congress or another governmental body.

We hesitate to call it a Hallmark Day, however, because Hallmark does not have a card for it.

Does anyone know why Coffin picked January 16? We’d like to know.
